The Stack Signal — June 25, 2026

“Gold breached $4,000 intraday before recovering — paper shakeout, not structural breakdown.”

Gold closed at $4041.60 and silver at $57.89, but the real story today was the intraday breach of $4,000 on gold — the first time spot touched that level in seven months — before recovering into the close. That recovery matters. The paper market ran stops below $4,000, printed a low around $4,018 on heavy COMEX volume, and then buyers stepped back in. That is not the behavior of a market in structural breakdown. That is a stop hunt followed by absorption, and anyone watching the tape closely saw it play out in real time. The gold/silver ratio sitting at 69.8 tells you silver got hit harder on the way down and recovered less cleanly, which is typical in a dollar-driven selloff where industrial sentiment also takes a hit.

Every article I wrote today points at the same confluence: a firming dollar, hawkish Fed rhetoric amplified by rate hike speculation, and Treasury Secretary Bessent running cover with his line about rate cuts not having to break the dollar. These are not independent events. They are coordinated messaging designed to do exactly what happened today — flush leveraged longs out of paper gold and silver futures before the next leg. The macro backdrop underneath all of it has not changed. Inflation is not gone; it is simply decelerating, which means purchasing power destruction continues, just at a slower pace. Cathie Wood and the CIOs predicting no rate hikes are probably right for the wrong reasons — the Fed cannot hike aggressively without detonating the debt market, and that constraint is itself a long-term argument for metal, not against it. The confusion among policymakers and analysts today is not a sign that the system is working. It is a sign that the system is cornered.

For physical stackers, today was a gift that most people in the mainstream will read as a warning. If you have been waiting for a dip to add weight, the intraday print near $4,000 gold and silver touching $57.56 is the kind of entry that looks obvious in hindsight. Your stack did not lose value today in any meaningful sense — the metal in your hand is the same metal it was yesterday. What changed is the paper price, temporarily, driven by futures positioning and dollar momentum that has a shelf life. The ratio at 69.8 continues to favor silver as the higher-leverage play if you believe the ratio mean-reverts toward the 50s, which historical precedent and industrial demand trends both support. Do not let today's headlines move you out of position.

The one thing to watch overnight is dollar index behavior and whether the DXY holds its gains into the Asian session. If the dollar softens even modestly during overnight trading, gold will test $4,050 resistance and potentially set up a stronger open tomorrow. Conversely, if dollar strength extends and we see another push toward the $4,000 level in thin overnight markets, watch whether that level holds as support or gets taken out again. A clean hold of $4,000 on a second test would be a technically constructive signal. A break below on volume would extend the shakeout, but it would also extend the buying opportunity. Either way, the fundamental thesis has not moved.
