The Stack Signal — September 14, 2026

“Gold holds $4,300 as Fed hike odds hit 90%, confirming the floor has teeth.”

Gold closed the session holding $4,340 after testing $4,300 support intraday, and that price action tells you everything you need to know about today's tape. The session opened with the market digesting another hot inflation print that pushed Fed rate hike odds to roughly 90% for this week's decision. That kind of headline typically sends paper gold lower as dollar strength flares up, and we did see a brief dip toward that $4,300 level in the early hours. It did not hold down there for long. Buyers stepped in hard, and by the close we were back above $4,340. Silver finished at $63.76 with the gold/silver ratio sitting at 68.1, which remains historically elevated and worth keeping in your peripheral vision. Volume was elevated across both metals, which suggests this was not a low-conviction bounce. Real money was moving.

Every article I worked through today pointed at the same central theme, just from different angles. The Fed is being dragged into a rate hike by inflation data it cannot ignore, and the mainstream financial press is treating the hike itself as the story. That is the wrong frame. The hike is a symptom. The inflation that forced it is the disease, and that disease is what your stack is insured against. The Australian Dollar took a hit today on rate differential pressure, which is the typical fiat currency shuffle that happens when one central bank moves faster than another. None of that changes the underlying math for physical holders. What matters is that gold absorbed a strong dollar environment, a near-certain rate hike, and genuine macro uncertainty around West Asia tensions, and still closed well above $4,300. That is not a market that wants to go lower.

For stackers, today reinforced something I have been saying for a while now. The Fed is not hiking rates to protect your purchasing power. They are hiking to manage the perception of institutional credibility and to protect the banking system from the inflation they helped create. Every basis point they raise without actually resolving the structural deficit spending and monetary expansion problem is another data point that validates why you hold physical metal outside the financial system. If you have been waiting for a dip to add to your position, the $4,300 test today was it. The ratio at 68.1 still makes silver the more compelling value add right now if you are looking to deploy capital.

Watch the overnight session closely, specifically the Asian open and how gold trades against any official Fed commentary or pre-decision leaks that hit the wires. If we see another test of $4,300 overnight and it holds again, that level is cementing itself as a floor with real conviction behind it. If the Fed surprises with more hawkish language than the market has priced in, you could see a sharp short-term selloff in paper gold. Do not confuse that with a change in the fundamental picture. A flush toward $4,280 or even $4,260 on a hawkish surprise would be noise, not signal. The signal is the persistent inflation the Fed is reacting to, and that signal is bullish for your stack regardless of what Powell says at the podium.
