The Stack Signal — September 16, 2026

“Gold settles near $4,302 as Fed hike bets dominate; paper weakness, physical opportunity.”

The headline today is straightforward: gold and silver closed lower across the board, with spot gold settling around the $4,302 handle and silver at $63.42, as the paper market fully priced in what looks like a near-certain Fed rate hike. The selling pressure was consistent and deliberate throughout the session — this wasn't a flash crash or a panic move, it was methodical futures positioning ahead of a major central bank decision. Volume told the story. Algorithmic selling dominated the tape, and the weak hands got exactly what the paper traders wanted them to do: they folded.

Here's where the eight articles I wrote today converge into a single picture. Every piece pointed at the same dynamic — oil-driven inflation is running hot, and the mainstream narrative is using that as a reason to call gold weak. That framing is backwards. Oil-driven inflation is broad-based cost pressure across the entire economy. It's the kind of inflation that doesn't respond cleanly to rate hikes, because you can't hike your way out of an energy supply problem. The Fed hiking into commodity inflation has historically been one of the more bullish setups for physical metal over a 12-to-18 month horizon, even if the paper market sells off in the immediate pre-decision window. What I tracked today was the paper market doing what it always does before a catalyst: manufacturing doubt. The gold/silver ratio sitting at 67.8 tells me silver is still undervalued relative to gold, and that spread tends to compress when the next leg up begins.

For your stack, today's close changes nothing structural. If you were looking for a re-entry point or a chance to add weight, the paper market just handed you one. Physical premiums haven't moved in lockstep with spot, which means the real market — the one where metal actually changes hands — isn't panicking. The disconnect between COMEX spot and physical availability is something I'll be watching closely in the days ahead. If premiums start climbing while spot stays suppressed, that's the signal that smart money is quietly accumulating. For now, hold what you have, and if you've got dry powder, this window is worth considering seriously.

The one thing to watch overnight is the Fed decision itself and Powell's language around the trajectory of future hikes. If the statement signals a pause after this hike, gold could gap up hard at the open tomorrow — the paper shorts will cover fast. If Powell sounds hawkish and telegraphs more hikes, expect another leg down in spot before the real buyers step in. Either way, watch the gold/silver ratio at the open. A ratio move below 67 on a gold bounce would confirm silver is leading, which is historically what happens when a new leg of the bull market begins. Stay patient, stay physical.
