Fed's Hawkish Stance Solidified: Inflation Data Fuels Stronger Rate Hike Bets

“Fed Ch”

This Reuters headline misses the entire point for anyone holding physical metal. The market is getting spun up because the Fed is "seen a bit more likely to hike" after inflation data came in hot. What everyone is missing is that the Fed being forced to consider hikes means one thing: inflation is not transitory, and it is still running hotter than they want to admit. This isn't a sign of control, it's a sign they are perpetually behind the curve, trying to catch a runaway train with a scooter. For your stack, this is confirmation that the underlying inflationary forces are persistent, which is precisely why you hold gold and silver.

The narrative that rate hikes are inherently bad for precious metals is a short-sighted one, pushed by those focused on paper returns and yield. Nominal rate hikes mean nothing if real rates remain deeply negative or barely positive. If CPI is still running at, say, 4-5% – or even higher, if you believe real world prices – then a 25-50 basis point hike does almost nothing to increase the real return on cash. All it does is tighten financial conditions on a system already drowning in debt, making a future pivot even more inevitable. Gold has shown its resilience, trading at 4667.6 spot even with this hawkish talk, while silver holds strong at 68.7.

Look at history. The 1970s saw the Fed hiking rates aggressively, but gold soared because inflation was out of control and real rates were negative for much of the decade. This isn't a new playbook; it's a rerun. The market is being misled by the idea that the Fed can control inflation with these incremental moves. They can't, not without crashing the entire system, and they know it. What they can do is signal their intentions, which often serve to manage expectations rather than truly impact the physical economy where your purchasing power is actually eroding.

The smart money isn't worried about a 25 basis point hike. They're watching the continued expansion of the money supply, the ballooning national debt, and the geopolitical instability that all provide a rock-solid fundamental backdrop for precious metals. This "more likely to hike" scenario simply underscores the government's inability to live within its means, guaranteeing the long-term debasement of fiat currency. Physical demand for gold and silver will only increase as more people wake up to the fact that their dollars are losing value every day, regardless of what the Fed says it's doing with interest rates.

Don't get distracted by the noise from the paper markets. Focus on the real economy. Continue to watch the actual inflation prints, not just the Fed's reaction to them, and how far behind the curve they truly are.
