The Stack Signal — October 14, 2026

“Gold at $4,159.70 and silver at $58.62 wobble before CPI while China's buying and factory inflation point the other way.”

The headline today is the gap between what paper markets are doing and what the underlying data says. Gold is sitting at $4,159.70 and silver at $58.62, both a little heavy going into tonight's US CPI release. The tape is reading Fed hike risk and trading around it. But a dip ahead of an inflation print is positioning, not a verdict. The more important signals today are coming from outside the Fed conversation entirely.

Here is how the pieces connect. On the macro side, Fed officials are split on whether more hikes are needed. Collins says inflation risks are persisting, and Goolsbee is now floating AI-driven demand as a fresh inflation source. A central bank that cannot agree on the path, and keeps finding new explanations for why prices are not behaving, is not a central bank in control of the narrative. Meanwhile, China's September producer prices jumped 5% while consumer prices stayed muted at 0.9%. That is cost pressure building at the factory gate, and silver is an input for a lot of those factories. Add the PBOC's 23-month gold buying streak and record Chinese imports, and you have a sovereign buyer accumulating steadily regardless of what the Fed says this week. Sprott's Zhu argues that higher silver prices may not dent demand until some tipping point is reached. I read that as a reminder that physical supply is inelastic and inventories get drawn down well before the paper price admits it. The Trinity Silver option in Chile's Maricunga belt is an exploration story and nothing more. It adds no metal to the market anytime soon.

For your stack, the practical read is that short-term volatility around data releases is a buying window, not a reason to change the plan. If CPI comes in hot and the market panics about hikes, you may see gold and silver dip further. If you have been waiting to add, have a number in mind and be ready. With the gold/silver ratio at 71.0, silver remains the more leveraged play on the industrial story, so if you are underweight silver relative to your gold, that is worth thinking about. Keep premiums in view when you buy, since spot dips do not always carry through to retail pricing. Do not chase mining names on the strength of exploration headlines; physical ounces are what you are stacking.

The one thing to watch is the reaction after tonight's CPI print, not the print itself. If gold holds near $4,159.70 even on a hawkish read, that tells you the central bank bid and physical demand are doing the work underneath. If it breaks lower and stays there, the Fed narrative is still in control for now. Watch the ratio at 71.0 as well, because a move down from here would mean silver is starting to lead.
