“Central banks are buying physical gold with conviction — South Korea's return after 13 years says everything.”
The single most important development heading into this week is the acceleration of central bank gold buying, headlined by South Korea's return to the market after a 13-year absence. That is not a footnote. That is a sovereign nation — one with a sophisticated, export-driven economy deeply embedded in the global dollar system — deciding that physical gold deserves a seat at the reserve table again. When a country that has been comfortable holding dollar-denominated assets for over a decade makes that call, it tells you something about the confidence level in the current financial architecture. Gold is sitting at $4,394 and silver at $64.08 with a ratio of 68.6, and the backdrop producing those prices is not speculative froth. It is structural.
This week, the macro calendar is going to matter. Watch for CPI data mid-week, which will either reinforce or complicate the rate-cut narrative that has been running alongside this rally. Fed speakers are likely active after last week's data cycle, and any dovish lean will add fuel. But here is the more important pattern my articles are pointing to collectively: the rate-cut story and the de-dollarization story are now reinforcing each other simultaneously, which is unusual. Typically you get one or the other driving metals. Right now you have central banks buying for strategic reserve diversification reasons independent of Fed policy, and you have Western investors piling in because they are pricing rate cuts. Both tailwinds are blowing the same direction. That kind of confluence does not unwind quickly. Technically, gold needs to hold $4,350 as near-term support after the recent push through $4,300. Silver's $62 level is the floor to watch. A clean hold above those levels into the weekly close would be constructive.
For physical stackers, the practical read this week is straightforward: premiums are likely to stay elevated or move higher if spot continues to grind up, so if you have been waiting for a dip to add, understand that the dip may not come in the form you expect. The central bank buying story removes a meaningful chunk of available physical supply from the market on an ongoing basis. South Korea is not buying paper futures. They are taking delivery. Every sovereign buyer that re-enters the market after years on the sidelines is competing with you for the same finite pool of refined metal. The gold-silver ratio at 68.6 still favors silver on a historical mean-reversion basis, and silver's push toward $65 is worth watching for confirmation that industrial and monetary demand are both present. If you are dollar-cost averaging, this week is not the week to pause.
The one thing to watch most closely this week is the Thursday CPI print and the immediate reaction in the dollar index. If CPI comes in soft and the dollar breaks down through near-term support, you could see gold make a run at $4,450 and silver test $66 before the week is out. Conversely, a hot CPI print would give the paper market an excuse to sell, which historically has been a buying opportunity for physical stackers who understand that the central bank accumulation trend does not reverse on a single data point. Watch how gold holds on any CPI-driven pullback. If it bounces fast and hard, the bid underneath this market is real and deep.
