The Stack Signal — October 12, 2026

“Gold pinned at $4,199.40 below $4,200 resistance as CPI week tests whether inflation fears finally break it higher.”

The headline this week is CPI. Gold is sitting at $4,199.40, pressed right up against the $4,200 level, with silver at $60.91 and the gold/silver ratio at 68.9. The market is positioned for an inflation print, with the forecast sitting around 3.7%, and how that number lands relative to expectations will decide whether $4,200 gets cleared or becomes a ceiling again. Mark that level on your chart. A clean weekly close above it changes the tone. Another rejection tells you the market wants more proof.

The context is that several stories we ran this past week are really one story. Inflation is running hot, which is why bond traders are now talking about a possible Fed hike in December if the data doesn't cooperate, and why the October 28 meeting carries more weight than usual. At the same time, the dollar has been softening, which has done more for gold than the dip in oil has. Underneath all of that, the structural bid has not gone anywhere. Central banks keep adding to reserves, and China keeps pulling in record amounts of physical metal. You will also see headlines about a gold plunge on paper days while physical demand data prints at records. Those two things can both be true in the short run. Paper prices react to rate expectations and positioning. Physical demand from sovereign buyers responds to a different set of incentives, and it is the slower, stickier force.

For your stack, the practical read is to treat CPI week as a volatility event, not a reason to change your plan. A hot print raises rate hike odds, which can knock gold down for a day or two even though the underlying inflation story is bullish for metal. A soft print can push the metal through resistance quickly. Either way, if you are buying on a schedule, keep to it. If you have been waiting for a dip, have your dealer premiums checked and your order ready before the release, because spreads on physical widen fast when spot moves. With the ratio at 68.9, silver remains the more leveraged way to add ounces per dollar, but it will swing harder than gold in both directions, so size accordingly.

The one thing to watch beyond the CPI release itself is the dollar. If the greenback keeps sliding while rate hike talk builds, that is a rare combination, and it would suggest the market is doubting the Fed's ability to get ahead of inflation. That is the setup where gold stops respecting $4,200 as resistance. If the dollar firms up instead, expect chop around this level into the October 28 decision.
