The Stack Signal — September 4, 2026
“Waller cracks the hawkish facade; gold surges 2% as Fed pivot narrative takes hold.”
The headline this week is Fed Governor Waller, full stop. His comments landed like a grenade in the middle of a market that had been pricing in continued aggression from the Fed, and gold responded with a clean 2% single-session move that pushed spot to $4,475. Silver tracked it, and here we are closing the week with the ratio sitting at 67.0 — still historically compressed relative to where it was two years ago, but meaningful in the context of a week where both metals moved together with conviction. The ADP miss earlier in the week set the table. Waller flipped the candles.
The through-line across everything I wrote this week is the same thesis I have been running since the second half of 2025: the Fed's hawkish posture was always a performance, and the economic data was always going to force their hand. Monday and Tuesday were quiet. Wednesday the ADP National Employment Report came in soft — meaningfully below expectations — and gold and silver started catching a bid as the labor market narrative the Fed had been leaning on began to crack. Then Waller spoke Thursday, and the paper market scrambled to reprice. What I want stackers to understand is that none of this week's action was a surprise if you were watching the right signals. The physical market has been telling this story for months. The COMEX is just now catching up. The article that got less attention than it deserved was the GoldSilver piece noting that gold barely moved when the market priced out half a hike earlier in the cycle. That muted reaction was not bearish — it was the market signaling it already knew the Fed was trapped. This week was the confirmation.
For your physical stack, here is what this week actually means. The macro tailwind is now aligning with what stackers have held through the noise. If you have been sitting on dry powder waiting for a catalyst to add weight, the Waller pivot narrative is going to have legs into Q4. Silver at $66.76 with the ratio at 67.0 still represents value relative to gold on a historical basis — if this rally has room to run and the ratio compresses toward 60, silver outperforms on a percentage basis. That is not a call to chase; it is a reminder of the math. On the gold side, $4,475 is a new psychological anchor. Watch how it behaves as support on any pullback next week. A clean hold above $4,400 on a retest would be constructive.
The one thing to watch next week is Friday's nonfarm payrolls report. The ADP miss set up the expectation for a soft NFP, and if that print comes in weak, you will likely see another leg higher in metals as September hike odds get priced out further. But do not sleep on a hot print either — a strong NFP number would give the hawks something to fight back with, and you could see a sharp intraday reversal in gold. That is your setup. The trend is your friend right now, but NFP is the week's hinge point. Know your levels before that number drops.
